History About Gold Coast Australia

The Gold Coast is the ancestral home of several Yugambeh clans, including the Kombumerri Mununjali and Wangerriburra clans, all of whom are descended from indigenous people of the Yugambeh people.

Europeans first set foot on the island in 1823, when explorer John Oxley made landfall at Mermaid Beach. It was the abundance of red cedar in the hinterland that initially drew people to the area in the mid-19th century.

Several tiny settlements grew up along the shore and in the interior as a result of this development. It wasn’t until 1870 that the western suburb of Nerang was surveyed and formed as a basis for the industry, and by then a town reserve had been constructed.

By 1873, the town reserve of Burleigh Heads had also been surveyed, and there had been many successful property sales.

In 1875, a tiny town known as Nerang Heads or Nerang Creek Heads, located opposite the boat route at the top of the Nerang River, was surveyed and renamed Southport, with the first property sales slated to take place in Beenleigh.

Southport soon gained a reputation as a hidden getaway for rich Brisbane residents seeking a relaxing vacation. The Gold Coast region had a tremendous expansion with the construction of the Surfers Paradise Hotel in the late 1920s.
