History About Darwin Australia

The Indigenous Australians of the Larrakia group of languages are the traditional caretakers and the first known residents of the wider Darwin area, having lived there since the time of the dinosaurs.

It is known as Garramilla, which is pronounced “Garr-ah-mill-ah” and translates as “white stone,” due to the color of the rock that may be found in the vicinity. (See Macassan’s relationship with Australia for more information.)

They had commercial channels with Southeast Asia and imported items from as far afield as South and Western Australia, among other places.

Songlines that had been established had spread throughout the land, allowing stories and histories to be shared and retold as they passed through different regions. The extent to which many clan groupings in this area have shared songlines and histories is debatable, as is the extent to which they have shared history. [a citation is required

After exploring Australia’s northern coastline in the 1600s, the Dutch made landfall in the Tiwi Islands, only to be rejected by the indigenous Tiwi people.

The Dutch were responsible for the earliest European maps of the region. This explains why the area is known by names such as Arnhem Land and Groote Eylandt, which are both Dutch.

Lieutenant John Lort Stokes of HMS Beagle is believed to have been the first British person to observe Darwin Harbour, which happened on September 9, 1839.
