History About Central Coast

Aboriginal people have lived in the area for a long time. The Kuringgai people were the first Aboriginal people to meet British people. In the early days of New South Wales, Bungaree was one of the most important people. He was an Aboriginal man who lived in the area.

This is how it works: He was one of the first Aboriginal people to learn English. Phillip, King, and Macquarie were all early governors who were good friends with him. He helped Matthew Flinders circumnavigate Australia. In the future, Macquarie said that Bungaree was “King of the Broken Bay Tribes.”

These people were not the only ones who spoke Kuringgai. There were also Awabakal and Darkinyung who lived near Lake Macquarie and were called “Pittwater and Broken Bay tribes” by early settlers.

The Kuringgai, Awaba, and Darkinyung languages are all related to each other, but they are not the same as the Dharrug and Sydney languages that were spoken south of the central coast. Post-settlement disease and disruption led to a big drop in the number of Aboriginal people.
